Amalienborg guardshift 1

Members of the Royal Guard protect the Amalienborg Palace at the royal residence in Cophenhagen. The Royal Guard is considered the elite force of the Danish Army. The guards are on duty for 24 hours, taking turns in two-hour intervals at various stations around the palace. These stations include standing in front of a guard house and marking back and forth in front of one of the palaces. Guard shifts take place daily at noon. Each day the parade starts from the barracks near the Rosenborg Castle. Depending on who is staying at the castle, one of three guard changes takes place in Kongevagt (King's Watch), Lojtnantsvagt (Lieutent Watch), and Palaevagt (Manor Watch).
When the monarch is in residence at the palace, the guard change occurs via the Kongevagt. This change features music from the Royal Guards band. The Lojtnantsvagt occurs when Prince Henrik is residing at the palace or Prince Joachim or Crown Prince Frederik are residing there in the capacity of regents. This change features music made from flutes and drums. Lastly, when no one is residing at the castle or Prince Joachim or Crown Prince Frederik are there but not as regents, the guards simply march through the city without a musical accompaniment.
