Marmorkirken

Most commonly known as Marmorkirken (The Marble Church), the Frederiks Kirke (Frederik's Church) calls Copenhagen home. The church was designed in 1740 by architect Nicolai Eigtved. It was intended to be a monument to the 300 jubilee of the first crowning of a member of the House of Oldenburg. Marmorkirken boasts the largest church dome in Scandinavia. The dome spans 31 meters and rests on 12 columns. Most likely the design was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. The church began construction in 1749 but, due to a lack of funding and other unfortunate events, wasn't completed until for nearly 150 years. After a long journey, the church finally opened on August 19, 1894. It was designed by Ferdinand Meldahl and financed by Carl Frederik Tietgen.
