Royal Theatre

The Royal Theatre stands on the south side of King's New Market Square in Copenhagen. The theatre began construction in 1872. It took two years to complete the Late Renaissance-style structure that was intended to become Denmark's national stage. The theatre is also commonly known as the Copenhagen Opera House and features a lavish circular auditorium that is considered the city's de facto culture center. At the main entrance of the Royal Theatre stand two, bronze statues. The statues are memorials to Danish comic dramatist Ludwig Holberg (1684-1754) and tragic dramatist Adam Oehlenschlager (1779-1850). Today the theatre hosts ballets, operas and dramas on a routine basis.
