Tivoli
Tivoli boasts one of the most famous views in all of Copenhagen. The area features a famous amusement park and a pleasure garden. Georg Carstensen (1812-1857) founded Tivoli. He obtained a five-year charter to construct the amusement park by convincing King Christian VIII that ìwhen the people are amusing themselves, they do not think about politics.î The area, spanning approximately 15 acres was granted to Carstensen for his project. From its inception, Tivoli boasts an array of variety attractions for exotic buildings a theatre, restaurants, flower gardens, restaurants and of course amusement rides. Sadly, several of Tivoli's buildings, including the concert hall, were destroyed in 1943 by Nazi sympathizers. In just a matter of weeks, however, the Danes constructed temporary buildings and reopened the park. It is said that America's Walt Disney was inspired by Carstensen and Tivoli. Disney later founded Disneyland and Disneyworld.
Today Tivoli is an international tourist attraction that is constantly evolving while holding onto its original charms and traditions. The park features more than 20 attractions include roundabouts, a roller coaster, halls of mirros and halls of horror, puppet theatres, open-air theaters, a concert hall and the gardens. Between mid-November to Dec. 23, one-quarter of the park is open, including the theater. During this time, entrance is free.
